Sweltering days lazing by the pool, steamy backyard cookouts with friends, soaking up the heat of the midday sun. Doesn’t summer sound like an Instagram filter-hued dream?
For some, sure. For pregnant mamas, hell no. While your girlfriends are dreaming of their hot girl summer, we know you’re probably dreading your hot (and sweaty AF) pregnant girl summer! But keep your cool, girl: here are seven tips for surviving pregnancy during summer.
Make wise wardrobe decisions
Keeping cool in summer while pregnant is a must because overheating can increase the chance of birth defects in your babe and your risk of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration (the last thing you want to be dealing with!).
Making wise wardrobe decisions is one way to keep temperate. Pregnant in summer and unsure what to wear? Open-toed shoes (like flip flops) and maternity clothing with ventilation (like flowy dresses) are a go-to. Side note: if flowy dresses were your ‘lewk’ before baby, it’s likely some might still fit while you’re growing said baby. That’s saved money for the baby budget right there.
Hang at the mall (or a museum, your local library, or the cinema)
Summer feels hot for the non-pregnant amongst us. Let alone those that are With Child. The physical changes during pregnancy can cause you to simply feel hotter than normal – go figure. So it’s not unusual if you feel the urge to wrap yourself around any air conditioning unit you can find.
While becoming BFFs with an air conditioning unit isn’t advised, you can just set up shop for the summer anywhere that has the A/C pumping 24/7 – like the mall, a museum, your local library, or a cinema. Pro tip: you could even clock up a little exercise doing laps of the mall, for example. Exercise during pregnancy can help stave off some of the more unwanted symptoms like backache and constipation, help you sleep better, and boost your mood. It can also help lower your risk of pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes and lead to a shortened labor.
Hit the pool again…and again
Hanging at the pool is downright enjoyable at the best of times, and it’s an easy way to stay cool on the hottest of days. (A bonus right there.) But, you might be interested to know that swimming during pregnancy can help relieve nausea and swelling, take pressure off your joints, improve blood circulation, and even lead to easier labor and delivery. So, you could take a few gentle laps for exercise or simply float the day away. Then, once you’re done, find a sun lounge, settle in, and pop on a podcast for the relaxation you deserve.
Kick your feet up
Extra fluid in your body combined with pressure from a growing uterus (thanks, baby) can cause your ankles and feet to swell. And it can worsen the hotter the weather is and the more pregnant you are (grrr). Swimming can help alleviate swelling (another reason to head to the pool, girl), but so can – quite literally – putting your feet up. So settle into your couch, cue the Netflix, and get your partner or a friend on snack delivery duty.
During pregnancy, dehydration is a no-no. It can lead to premature labor, neural tube defects, inadequate breast milk production, and other serious pregnancy complications. You need more water than your non-pregnant friends – at least 8-12 glasses a day – and even more as the thermostat rises. Water is a fabulous (and free, from the tap!) source of hydration, but you can also experiment with slushies, or mocktails, too. The only downside? You already need to pee a ton during pregnancy, so you might find yourself hitting the bathroom more the more you drink.
Be selective about what you do at which times
One of the simplest ways to stay cool is to be selective about what you do at which time of day. Save your exercise and errands, for example, for the morning and evenings – i.e., the coolest parts of the day. Make the middle of the day – the hottest period – for rest and relaxation. Remember what we said about kicking your feet up?
Make some clever purchases
We’re giving you a hall-pass to shop, girl. (You can thank us later.) But in all seriousness, a few clever purchases can make summer a helluva lot more bearable. Here are five must-buys:
Fill-er up with water, spritz on the go, at home, in bed, whenever. For extra cooling bonus points, spritz yourself while standing in front of a fan or A/C unit. Icy!
Chafing happens. Especially when your thighs have grown during pregnancy, you’re wearing nothing but skirts and dresses because that’s where you’re at in life, and it’s hot as sh*t. So get some anti-chafe.
To your pre-pregnancy self, this might have seemed like a funny gimmick. But, to your pregnant self, this is a godsend. Simply wet it, and pop it around your neck for instant chill.
A broad-brimmed hat
Channel your inner (pregnant) Carrie Bradshaw with a broad-brimmed hat to help keep you cool when outdoors. It’s a must for your summer pregnancy outfits, plus it can help protect your ultra-sensitive pregnancy skin from sun damage.
